Day 5: Talking to Your Child About COVID-19

Coping with the uncertainty around COVID-19 is challenging for most adults….let alone children. It is important to recognize that children may be having an even tougher time during this pandemic.

Children may worry about themselves, their family, and friends getting ill with COVID-19. They may also be struggling with social isolation, the cancellation of favourite activities, and being off school for an extended period of time.

Parents, family members, school staff, and other trusted adults can play an important role in helping children make sense of what they hear in a way that is honest, accurate, and aims to minimize anxiety or fear.

The following recommendations are designed to help adults provide reliable information about COVID-19 to children and to help children manage their worries.
